Houston’s DJ AudiTory gives Sabrina Claudio’s amazing debut LP his ‘Chop Theory’ treatment.
When “Best of 2017” lists start rolling in, they should all include ‘About Time.’ The long-awaited debut album from Miami-born, L.A.-bred singer Sabrina Claudio proved more worthy of the wait, covering love, heartbreak, and a wealth of emotions within its 12 tracks. Following Claudio’s ‘Confidently Lost’ EP earlier this year, ‘About Time’ was an extremely refreshing soul release, its replay value still holding two months after its release. And opened for 6LACK during his ‘FREE 6LACK’ tour, blowing fans away at every concert.
Keeping with his tradition of turning the hottest albums purple, Houston’s DJ AudiTory opted to give Claudio’s debut his “Chop Theory” treatment. “I had to chop this album off the love,” the DJ said of ‘About Time’ on his website. “It was one of those projects that I just knew off the bat I would chop once I heard it.”
Chopping & screwing slows things down so listeners can appreciate the nuances, the lyrics, and all the little things that come together to make the music great. Since so much of ‘About Time’ is already slow or at least lowtempo, AudiTory’s purple take stretches the songs out even more to take them to another level.
The guitars and snares alongside Claudio’s ethereal voice on the original “Everlasting Love,” for example, transform into something more country blues in the chopped and screwed version. Tory turns standout cut “Frozen” into a five-and-a-half-minute syrupy symphony – and the bass guitar solo at the end sounds even more amazing purpled up. The Latin-tinged “Used To” gets taken to the islands in its wine-ready, chopped and screwed form. And the album’s closer, the 6LACK-assisted “Belong To You (Remix),” becomes a smooth slow burn with Tory’s chops at work. That song alone, may be proof positive of AudiTory’s claim that “this can be a naughty tape if you bout that life.”
