Chance The Rapper x DJ AudiTory

Chance The Rapper’s Coloring Book album – abbreviated as #Chance3 – has only been out a week and it’s already become one of the most lauded releases of the year. The project will likely be considered for next year’s Grammys, and the widespread acclaim will only grow larger when Coloring Book is free of its Apple Music exclusivity and on other streaming platforms like Spotify a week from today.

As has been his penchant with the year’s major releases so far, Houston’s own DJ AudiTory gave Chance’s latest the “Chop Theory” treatment, chopping & screwing the melodies in his own original way. The defining characteristic of Coloring Book was its gospel influences; the Chopped & Screwed version replaces those influences with something very different. From the very beginning, when DJ AudiTory slows down opening track “All We Got” featuring Kanye West & The Chicago Children’s Choir, emphasizing the horns and making the instrumentation more jazzy than spiritual, it’s clear that AudiTory is presenting a very different experience. The DJ’s take on “No Problems” has Chancellor Bennett sounding like he’s gone off lean, with 2Chainz and Lil’ Wayne clutching styrofoam cups alongside him. If you resisted the dab on the original “Mixtape,” it’s utterly impossible to upon hearing AudiTory’s version. And DJ AudiTory turns the Justin Bieber and Towkio-assisted “Juke Jam,” into the purple-dripping blues.

That doesn’t mean the gospel undertones are gone entirely. “D.R.A.M. Sings Special” goes from a solo short-piece to a gospel song, with the dialtones at the end slowed down to sound like a church organ. Chance preaches from a purple pulpit on “Blessings” and Jamilah Woods’s voice is in even better sync with the horns on AudiTory’s version than it is on the original; and it flows perfectly into the just as churchy-sounding “Same Drugs.” And “Finish Line/Drown” is an aural experience to say the least. DJ AudiTory’s chops emphasize the instrumentation, and make Chance’s project overall color even more outside the lines than it already did.
