Slim K has been having a solid run this October – well, Choptober, we should say. The producer/DJ and OG Ron C-anointed Chopstar already set the waves in motion for plenty of July babies to be born by way of his Nice & Slow 51: Sexual Remedy mixtape two weeks ago, and he intends to end the month by dropping Chop Apocalypse on Halloween this weekend. But before that lands, Slim K went back to the 2000s to revisit Kanye West’s glory days.
Kanye, as most will remember, damn near couldn’t miss in his earlier years. The rapper’s first two albums, The College Dropout and Late Registration, are considered in the Top 3 of the Chicago emcee’s all-time discography; with his third album, Graduation, either falling just outside of that or just within it because of its anthemic, stadium music feel. And so, Slim K digged in the crates and handpicked some of the better tracks from those three albums to give the chopped not slopped treatment.
The end result of that? Slim K’s College Reunion… Starring Kanye West mixtape, a nearly two-hour, twenty three track history lesson in the pre-Kardashian Mr. West. Rather than assembling the tracks in chronological order, Slim K’s selections are organized according to how well they flow together. So “We Don’t Care” seamlessly merges into the slowed-down and soulful Slim K version of “Get Em High,” and the trifecta of “Can’t Tell Me Nothin”-“Never Let Me Down”-“Through The Wire” is absolutely legendary.
Credit Slim K, as well, for not just choosing popular songs for College Reunion, either. True, it might have been nice to hear a purpled-up version of “Hey Mama” or “Gold Digger”; but by the same token, you can tell Slim K is a true fan of old ‘Ye, revisiting “I Wonder” and “Spaceship,” and ingeniously selecting the legendary “Last Call” outro from College Dropout as his tape’s outro track as well. The hits have their charm, too, however: the purple’d up “Get Em High” is a thing of beauty, and Slim K’s take on “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” gives the anthem a ’70s lowrider feel that has to be heard to be believed.
